Autumn-Winter 2026: Cat Dry Skin and Excessive Shedding – 3-Step Seasonal Care Guide

Shedding doubles during coat change season, and indoor heating makes the air dry. Your cat's skin starts to flake and fur becomes brittle – this isn't an illness, it's a normal seasonal response, but it does need your attention.

The shedding season is one of the fastest metabolic periods for cats. As the summer coat falls out and the winter coat grows in, the skin's surface metabolism speeds up. If you brush without caring for the skin, you'll see more flaking and brittle, breaking fur.

Why do cats get skin problems in autumn and winter?

There are two main seasonal effects on cat skin:

Dry air: when indoor heating is turned on, air humidity drops significantly. Dry environments directly cause moisture loss from the skin, leading to flaking and itching. Simple logic: if the air in your home is dry, your cat's skin will be dry too.

Shedding season skin sensitivity: during coat change, skin metabolism accelerates. Old fur falls out and new fur grows in, temporarily weakening the skin's barrier function and making it more prone to sensitivity and inflammation.

Normal shedding vs signs to watch for

Cats Protection experts note that normal shedding is: all-over, even fur loss, with healthy pink (or naturally pigmented) skin underneath – no redness, flaking, or sores.

Contact your vet if you see:

Cats Protection, Catster, and Catlink list these warning signs:

1、Bald patches or localised hair loss – not even shedding, but patches of fur missing

2、Red, inflamed skin, flaking, or scabbing

3、Excessive scratching or frequent licking of a specific area

4、Fur coming out in clumps rather than individual hairs

5、Shedding accompanied by weight changes, increased thirst, or other symptoms

Note: if you notice these signs, it's worth a vet visit to rule out underlying issues like fungal infections, parasites, or allergies.

3-step seasonal care plan

Step 1: Brush daily (control shedding + boost circulation)

Catster notes: brushing is the most effective way to manage shedding – remove the loose fur before it ends up on your furniture.

Vets recommend:

1、Long-haired cats: brush daily during shedding season

2、Short-haired cats: brush 2-3 times a week

3、Recommended tools: wide-tooth comb or undercoat rake for long-haired cats; rubber brush or grooming glove for short-haired cats

Brushing also stimulates sebaceous glands to produce natural oils that help keep skin moisturised.

Step 2: Manage bath frequency and technique

Direct  4 Pet's vets advise:

1、Bath frequency: even during shedding season, over-bathing is not recommended – it strips natural oils and makes dryness worse. Aim for one bath every 4-6 weeks

2、Bath technique: use a pet-specific moisturising shampoo – human products will disrupt a cat's skin pH balance

3、Conditioning: follow up with a pet-specific conditioner or moisturising spray after bathing to lock in moisture

Hartz notes that if your pet has seasonal dry skin issues, adjusting bathing habits and increasing environmental humidity can effectively relieve symptoms.

Step 3: Dietary support (from the inside out)

Nutrition directly affects skin and coat health. Catster recommends:

1、Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids – nourish the skin, reduce flaking, and strengthen hair follicles

2、Quality animal protein – fur is mostly protein – make sure your cat's food has enough of it

Wellness Pet notes that if a pet isn't getting enough essential fatty acids or quality protein, shedding season can bring more flaking and dry fur than expected. Dermoscent also notes that skin is a constantly renewing organ – any imbalance in amino acids, essential fatty acids, or trace elements can affect the skin's barrier function.

Boost water intake: cats are more prone to dehydration in dry environments, and dehydration directly causes dry skin. Place water bowls in multiple locations, try a pet water fountain, or supplement with wet food.

Final thoughts

During autumn and winter, dry skin and increased shedding are normal seasonal responses. As long as the fur loss is all-over, even, and not accompanied by skin issues, there's no need to worry.

All you need is three things: an extra 5 minutes of brushing daily, controlled bathing frequency, and a little fish oil in their diet. If your cat continues to shed beyond the seasonal window, or develops bald patches or red skin, it's worth a vet check before the problem gets worse.

Your cat won't tell you "my skin is dry." But whether they spend this autumn comfortably depends on whether you're willing to do that little bit extra before the problem appears.
