Danger 1: Car bonnet warming (cats die this way every year)
When it gets cold, cats climb under car bonnets, into wheel arches, or onto tyres. This isn't a "once in a while" thing – cats naturally seek warm places in winter, and a car engine that's still warm after being switched off is like a built-in heater to them.
If you start the engine without checking, the cat could be burned, caught in the fan belt, or killed instantly. Embrace Pet Insurance experts note that vets regularly see cats with severe burns or degloving tail injuries from hiding in cars.
What to do:
1、Tap the bonnet three times before starting the engine – the noise gives the cat time to escape
2、Check under the car and around the wheel arches

Danger 2: Darker nights – increased road traffic accident risk

1、Keep antifreeze bottles sealed and stored out of reach
2、Clean up any spills immediately
3、Consider using antifreeze with propylene glycol – it's less toxic than ethylene glycol
Danger 4: Autumn plants and fungi – acorns, conkers, and mushrooms
Autumn brings things to the ground that cats shouldn't eat:
1、Acorns and conkers – if swallowed, can cause vomiting, diarrhoea, gut blockages, or toxicity
2、Mushrooms – damp autumn weather means wild mushrooms pop up in gardens, parks, and woodlands – some varieties are highly toxic to cats and dogs, and even a small amount can cause serious illness
What to do:
1、Check your garden for mushrooms before letting your cat out
2、Keep cats on a lead in woodland or park areas (if you walk your cat) – it stops them eating things off the ground
3、If you see your cat eat a mushroom – don't wait. Contact your vet immediately. If it's safe to do so, take a photo or a sample to help with identification
Danger 5: Dropping temperatures – keeping warm
Cats need extra warmth in cold weather – especially these groups:
1、Senior cats – joints stiffen in the cold, making movement harder
2、Short-haired cats – they don't have enough undercoat to keep warm
3、Outdoor cats – if they insist on going out, they need a warm, dry shelter
What to do:
1、Provide a warm bed indoors – away from draughty doors, raised off the floor, with thick blankets or a pet-safe heated pad
2、Provide an outdoor shelter for community cats – if there are stray or feral cats in your area, a plastic storage box lined with foam insulation and filled with straw (not blankets – straw doesn't get wet and freeze) works well. Make sure it's in a quiet, sheltered spot away from roads and dogs
3、Keep water available – if your cat only drinks outdoors, check that the bowl isn't frozen
